GLOBAL LINKAGES WORKING GROUP

By coordinating our voices around food as a human right, we are creating a platform for greater collaboration and engagement with global partners and processes.

The Global Linkages working group is a space for members to work together on submissions to the United Nations, engage with national and global partners, and strategize about our role as a Community of Practice holding the U.S. government accountable for the effect of its policies and laws in other countries.

This includes monitoring the progression and regression of the right to food within the U.S. and using human rights treaty mechanisms to leverage accountability at home. We engage with United Nations Special Rapporteurs through visits and calls for evidence, and we participate in treaty monitoring processes and the Universal Periodic Review when the United States is under review for its compliance with international human rights obligations.

We also connect with advocates working in other countries to understand more about their successes and challenges, and how we might learn from and adapt these lessons in our local and state contexts.

Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

Progress towards human rights in the United States and around the world is propelled by civil society participation in accountability mechanisms like the UPR.

On November 7, 2025, the United States was scheduled to participate in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process in Geneva. Instead, the U.S. federal government announced its withdrawal from the UPR process in August, marking a break from decades of participation. The review has been rescheduled for November 2026.

We join many others who have raised concerns that this withdrawal undermines the progression of human rights in the United States and around the world.
